H. Roald Lund

Hartvig Roald Lund was born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1933, graduated from high school at Nome, ND, and received his Baccalaureate Master’s degrees from NDSU in Fargo, where he studied agronomy and agriculture education.  Roald served in the Infantry Officers Leadership School and was discharged as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1959.  Upon returning to the state he was named Assistant Professor in the Agronomy Department at NDSU and also worked with the plant breeding programs for hard red spring wheat and oats.  In 1962, he began his doctorate degree program at Purdue University, studying corn genetics.  He returned to NDSU three years later as an Associate Professor.  He was named as the Assistant Dean of Agriculture and Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1969, and ten years later was promoted to Dean and Director.  Under his leadership, rapid growth occurred in the areas of the agricultural student body, faculty and facilities, both on campus and at various sites across the state.  Roald held these positions until 1994, when he returned to active teaching and research, where his primary work centers in breeding potatoes.  During his term as Dean, he served on many regional and national committees associated with agriculture and education.  He’s received awards from Alpha Zeta; State Honorary Farmer Degrees from the FFA, and recognition from the US Durum Growers Association, the ND Crop Improvement Association and the ND Grain Growers Association.
